Hook's redemption takes his relationship with Emma to the next level

March 22, 2015   |   Written by Zap2it

Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) has really gone off the deep end — in love that is.

Hook had to come to terms with his turbulent past with Ursula (Merrin Dungey) on Sunday’s (March 22) episode of “Once Upon a Time”. The reacquaintance with his dark side made him realize just how much he loves Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison).

Once he was able to overcome his pirate urges and help Ursula get back the voice he took from her centuries ago, Hook reveals that the scariest thing about being a villain was the possibility of losing his happy ending. More importantly, he tells Emma that she’s that happy ending.

“Hook is definitely trying to be the better man. Now that he’s giving himself whole heartedly to being in love with Emma — and wanting to do the right thing by her — he’s desperately trying to be a good person,” O’Donoghue explains to Zap2it.

Hook has been pretty open about being in love with Emma since their time in Neverland in Season 3, but admitting that his happy ending is being with her is a whole level of commitment. Though she seemed shock in the moment, Emma decides not to run after the declaration — showing just how much their relationship has developed and what Hook also means to her.

However, as Hook points out, knowing your happy ending makes it that much easier to lose. Rumpelstiltskin’s (Robert Carlyle) plan to get the villains their happy ending means filling Emma’s heart with darkness and it may be the biggest hurdle the couple has had to overcome yet.

“A happy ending would be being with Emma and living a happy long life with her. Of course, this is Storybrooke, so that’s not necessarily a thing that’s going to happen,” O’Donoghue teases.

While there’s still trouble ahead for the Captain and the Savior, O’Donoghue isn’t too worried about Hook’s dark past being part of the problem. Helping Ursula find her voice has shown him the strength he has to be hero, even if the temptation to stab Rumple through the heart with a dagger is stronger than ever.

“Hook lived for hundreds of years with revenge in his heart. There’s still at tiny bit of a pirate in him and coming to terms with that has been the struggle for him in Storybooke,” O’Donoghue explains. “That’s a constant struggle for him. For the moment he’s overcoming that and trying to become the best person he can be for Emma.”
