When we last left off with our favorite fairy tale characters, Rumple fell into a coma after being freed from the darkness, Zelena sat pregnant in a cell, and Emma saved Regina and the rest of the town from the darkness only to disappear and leave the Dark One’s dagger behind, freshly etched with “Emma Swan.”

Once Upon A Time’s fifth season premiere, aptly titled, “Dark Swan”, picks up right where the finale left off with Emma’s loved ones trying to figure out how to get her back. Meanwhile, the Dark Swan rises in the Enchanted Forest with a devil on her shoulder in the form of Rumple. He wants to teach her all about the Dark One’s powers so she can embrace her inner villain, but Emma’s much more interested in finding Merlin so she can get rid of the darkness once and for all.

Since the beginning of the series, the show has focused on the battle between good and evil and we’ve seen several characters explore both sides of the spectrum. As much as Emma wants to be good and protect the people she loves, the power of the Dark One coursing through her is hard to resist. We get to see her struggles and through Rumple, as well as brief, compelling flashbacks, we learn intriguing details of what it means to be the Dark One and why the connection to Camelot is so strong.

As Emma’s doing her thing, Team Hero once again finds itself needing a member of Team Villain in order to succeed. In this case, that villain is everyone’s favorite (or least favorite) Wicked Witch. Like her one-time mentor, Zelena’s assistance comes with a steep price. We can’t go into much more detail than that, but we can say that the premiere left us excited about watching this storyline unfold. The show is back to focusing on its core cast and turning the leading lady into a potential villain seems to have breathed fresh life into the series that lost its footing last season.

Onto the good stuff: Here are a 10 teasers plus some bonus dialogue to tide fans over until the show returns in five short days:

1. The Dark Swan isn’t the only new version of Emma we meet in the episode. A young Emma gets a surprising warning.

2. Look for some familiar faces to enlist in the latest big adventure and someone surprising steps up to be the sheriff in Emma’s absence.

3. For those who may have doubted how Robin feels about Regina, a scene in the Charming loft puts those questions to rest.

4. When one plan fails, a determined Hook recruits Henry for a rogue mission behind Regina’s back.

5. Snow is in full Mama Bear mode when it comes to saving her daughter and she plays (aggressive) mediator to those who don’t see eye to eye.

6. Rumple’s in a coma, but there’s still a lovely Beauty and the Beast moment for Belle.

7. It’s hard to say which character introduction is the best: Merida or Arthur. One leads to a moment that left us gasping.

8. Regina faces a tough choice with a lot of personal consequences. Watch her take a page from someone else’s book when it’s time to act.

9. During a tense moment, Hook’s faith in Emma continues to shine. But will he be too late to curb her dark impulses?

10. The final scene of the episode: WOW. (Prepare to ask Zelena for her time travel spell to get to episode 5×02.)

Some of our favorite lines:

“Do you like knitting?”

“I guess that’s my cue.”

“You can’t be surprised your family’s troubled.”

“Did you ever hear the phrase slow and steady wins the race?”

As Once Upon A Time enters its fifth season on September 27, the show picks up where everything left off with Season 4 — Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is the newest Dark One, and it will take some people close to her to get her back.

We spoke with creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis today following a screening of the premiere to get some intel as to what we can expect.

“Her relationships with everybody are going to be tested,” Kitsis told us about Emma’s situation. “We love the idea of watching Hook fight for her, as well as Regina and her family.”

The notion that two of the characters closest to Emma fought their own dark sides is not lost on the producers. “We also love the notion that two of the people that she has expectedly and not-expectedly grown closer to over the years, Regina and Hook, have both battled darkness themselves, and the fact that she is facing darkness and they’ve faced it, and how their experiences can inform what she’s going through and either help or hinder her is something that we want to explore in this half of the season and beyond,” Adam Horowitz reflected.

We just finished watching the Once Upon a Time season 5 premiere and we can tell you right now it’s an epic comeback for some of our favorite Disney characters.

In the Once Upon a Time season 5 premiere not only do you get to see Dark Emma but you also get to see Arthurian legend come to life once again in Camelot. We can’t say much, but we do have these five teasers for you to get you excited about the episode:

– The dagger’s history will blow your mind. We knew that we were going to find out the history of the dark one, but we didn’t think it’d start this soon! You’ll be wanting more after the first few minutes reveal the dagger’s biggest mystery.

– More enchanted objects. Unrelated to the dagger, a new and very familiar (and famous) enchanted object gets introduced this Sunday. We won’t tell you what movie it’s from but its by far one of the most iconic objects in Disney film history. Hint: It’s not the sword in the stone, nor is it related to Camelot.

– There is no major curse this year. The past few seasons have revolved around a gigantic curse that takes place on the town or a set of characters, and we’re happy to tell you that this year breaks tradition. Instead we find ourselves with a very interesting prophecy that leads us to unexpected places.

– The little voices get heard! During the last five years we’ve been introduced to several recurring characters who had tiny one-off episodes and not much else. This season brings some of those characters back to the forefront of the battle and this premiere starts it all. Don’t expect the Huntsman any time soon but it might be time to whistle hi ho.

– This is Once Upon a Time‘s biggest adventure. Not only are our favorite characters going to Camelot to find Merlin but they’re doing it together as a family. This is all one big family effort to save Emma and none of the series regulars are left out! If the premiere is anything to go by we expect some crazy awesome things to happen with these characters this season.

Exciting, right?! And that’s not all. In addition to our five teasers we’ve gone ahead and listed some of the more memorable quotes that you can look forward to when Once Upon a Time returns. We won’t say who said ’em though, you’ll have to watch to find out!

– “We need someone wicked.”
– “At least you’re not a bear.”
– “Please go away you’re ruining my chi.”
– “…you like having a hook, maybe you’ll like another.”

That’s about all we can say about “The Dark Swan,” but we hope you’re just as excited to watch it as we were.

TVLINE | Jen [Morrison] and Lana [Parrilla] talked at Comic-Con about how their roles have sort of been “flipped” here. How does the role of quasi-savior fit on Regina at first?
HOROWITZ | It’s not necessarily that Regina is the Savior, but she has been put into a position now where she owes Emma [for saving her from the Darkness]. She’s become a more heroic character over the years but now she has her biggest challenge yet, and it’s an awkward fit for her because she’s not used to having to lead or take charge. And she’s got to work with people like Hook, who has a very strong interest in saving Emma as well. And both Hook and Regina are strong personalities.

TVLINE | Will Hook be more active in this arc? Perhaps his most active since Neverland?
He is hell-bent on saving Emma, so he is going to be quite active over the first 10 episodes.
HOROWITZ | Emma facing the darkness as the new Dark One forces Hook to confront the darkness in himself that he’s spent hundreds of years coming to terms with. It gives him unique insight into Emma’s predicament and pushes their relationship to what we think are exciting but also potentially dangerous places. It’s never been easy for these two, and things are only going to get dicier. That said, Hook has proclaimed his love for Emma — and he’s not going to give up on her easily.

Could Emma being dark entice Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) to go dark as well?
Well, there certainly is a dark part to Hook that is engaged by the Darkness that is taking over Emma, and it is something that he certainly can relate to in a way that many others can’t.

KITSIS: But I would say that right now his main focus is on saving the woman he loves. The one thing about Hook is he spent 300 years trying to kill Rumple, so he doesn’t give up so easy, he doesn’t change himself that easy.
