How much will we explore Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and Ursula’s (Merrin Dungey) past?
Edward Kitsis:
We’re getting a whole episode. Episode 15 will explain what he did to her. It was not sexual. It is, as he said, far worse. When you think about what would be worse than having your heart broken. I would say it was having your soul crushed. You’re going to see the entire flashback of what happened. You’re going to see the entire origin of Ursula.

How does Ursula’s dad fit into that? You cast Ernie Hudson as her dad.
Similar to what we’ve done with Cora, Young Cora and Emma, Young Emma, we’re going to meet Ursula at about 18 or 19. As we all know, Hook is about 385 years old. It’s the guy liner.

Will Will Scarlet be a target for Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle)? How jealous is Rumple?
He’s not happy.
Kitsis: Listen, the last person who took his woman was Hook, and he took his hand off and killed his wife, so I’d be worried.

On Once Upon a Time‘s spring premiere, it looked like Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) were getting along like fairy-tale franks and beans (What? It’s a thing. Just ask Granny.). Unfortunately, in this exclusive sneak peek of Sunday’s episode (8/7c, ABC), that little honeymoon period appears to have passed. Watch the video above to see what’s gotten in the way of the lovebirds’ happiness.

We can’t even imagine what sordid past he and Ursula (Merrin Dungey) have together. Did he eat calamari in front of her? Or maybe she once stole his hook? Fortunately, all is not lost between him and Emma. Even if her trust in him is tested, series co-creator Edward Kitsis assures TVGuide.com, “Hook feels that his job is protecting Emma’s heart at all costs, so we will see that play out.”

Could contain spoilers.

Question: Do you have any scoop on what’s going with Once Upon a Time’s Hook? —Jessica
Episode 15 (airing March 15) will reveal why the pirate has a quite complicated past with sea witch Ursula — and the nature of it is “far worse” than any romantic indiscretion, says co-creator Eddy Kitsis. “When you think about what would be worse than having your heart broken, I would say having your soul crushed. You’re going to see the entire flashback of what happened, with the origin of Ursula.”

Question: Is Once Upon a Time actually considering a Belle/Hook pairing or are they just keeping the two busy, while Rumple and Emma are busy with the Queens of Darkness? —Linda
No, no, no. They’re not hinting at a Belle/Hook pairing. Belle and Will Scarlett, however, may be a different story, as you’ll see teased this Sunday. As series co-creator Eddy Kitsis notes, Belle and Will, after all, have “a lot in common,” in that “they both fell in love with villains (Rumple and Wonderland’s Red Queen, respectively), and they both hoped that these villains would be redeemed.” And they both were let down. With Rumple banished (as far as Belle knows!) and Anastasia MIA, “Anytime you have your heart broken,” Kitsis says, “you look for a way to smile again.”

As seen in the last episode, Rumple (Robert Carlyle) had past dealings with a particularly pernicious posse of evildoers and after being thrown out of town, he headed to Manhattan to reconnect with the bane of one little mermaid’s existence — Ursula (Merrin Dungey). In the premiere Sunday, the duo also manages to hook up with another past associate left without magic in the real world: Cruella De Vil (Dracula’s Victoria Smurfit). He promises that if they pool their resources they can get powers back and happy endings. Don’t expect the puppy-napper of your childhood. Kitsis explained, “We re‑imagined Cruella. We wanted her to be Zelda Fitzgerald, more jazz age than ’50s England. There’s a sass to her. And we thought she should have a power — she can speak to animals like Dr. Dolittle, but in a more cruel way — so that she feels a part of the show. The origin of that power is coming up soon.”

“Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and Emma’s relationship will suffer another setback when the sheriff Swan deduces that Ursula and her boyfriend go way back and he refuses to tell her what went down. He will claim their paths simply crossed when he was sailing the seven seas and she ruled the deep, but an upcoming episode will contain flashbacks that reveal “what he did to her. It is not sexual. It is far worse,” said Kitsis. “What would be worse than having your heart broken, having your soul crushed. You’re going to see the origin of Ursula. We all know Hook is about 385 years old and we meet Ursula around 18-19. Emma’s about to find out some really bad information.”

Can you talk about how you’ll be putting the focus back on the original characters?
HOROWITZ: As far as focusing on our core cast in the upcoming storytelling, it isn’t so much about the outside forces coming into our world, but about how these outside forces impact our core characters and what it’s going to do to them and their relationships.
KITSIS: We’re going to really explore what makes a hero and what makes a villain. Is it as black and white as just that? Or are there gray areas, which are always much more fun to write about. We’re going to pick up on a lot of things that we set up in the first half of the season. Regina and Robin (Sean Maguire), Rumple and Belle (Emilie de Ravin). We’re going to get more Snow and Charming. We’re going to get more Emma and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue).

Will we also get to see more of Hook’s backstory?
KITSIS: We’re going to see a Hook backstory, absolutely. We’re going to see him at his most pirate-y.

Can you talk about Hook and Belle working together?
KITSIS: What’s interesting is Hook actually shot her in season 2. He used her as a pawn to get back his revenge for Mr. Gold, but now they both find themselves on similar ground, which is they both feel betrayed by Rumplestiltskin. He literally had both their hearts. Hook feels a lot of shame and guilt for getting rid of the fairies. Belle feels upset because she was deceived. We’re going to see them work together to try to repair some of the damage done.

What’s next for Emma and Hook’s relationship?
KITSIS: What we’re trying to do is just show a relationship, a real one, even though it’s between Captain Hook and the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. What we’re going to do is we’re going to see them grow and we’re going to see them get tested. Like all things, sometimes things get in the way of just purely your relationship; sometimes life gets in the way of it.

4. @niyati_92: Do Emma and Killian have a convo about everything that occurred in 4A? Or do they have any heart-to-heart convo?
They actually have both! Their biggest and most swoon-worthy conversation happens in the sheriffs’ office in episode 14. Kitsis teased that Emma is “beginning to open her heart up,” and it most certainly shows. And, as we’ve said before, Emma and Hook have coffee in Sunday’s premiere. Note: By coffee, we mean the dark-colored liquid that many drink to stay awake. As for the nookie-nickname that the Captain Swan fandom has created? All we can say is stay tuned…

8. @CapitainSwan__: I heard that Hook and Belle became good friends. Can you tell us anything more about their friendship?
We can tell you that we adore this friendship more than a basket full of newborn kittens. Seeing Hook comfort Belle in a moment of sadness — and vice-versa — will warm your heart. Plus, the fact that they are combining their brilliant minds to solve a puzzling case, makes us wish they had their own spin-off procedural called CSI: Storybrooke.

13. @good_plain_jane: Do we get to see any of Hook’s insecurities that Adam & Eddy were talking about? Or any clue which QOD he knows?
We’re definitely getting a deeper peek at the internal struggles that Hook is battling with. “We are going to realize that he has got some things going on in his head that he is concerned about,” Kitsis shared. As for which Queen of Darkness Hook shares a past with? We can’t tell you who it is, but we can tell you that Emma’s wave of jealousy/curiosity after seeing [Spoiler] and Hook’s first encounter back together is definitely worth-watching.

18. @ouat_csfan_: Can we get a quote between Hook and someone?
“Love is a weapon.” — Hook to Belle.

22. @Melaniee_27: On a scale of 1 to captain swan heaven how perfectly cute is captain swan in 4×12 and 4×13?
Okay, let us put it this way. Take a look at this puppy…
You know those feeling you’re feeling right now? High pitched squeals of delight, wanting to scream “Suh kewt!” and the overpowering instincts to smother it with love and affection? That’s CaptainSwan in the first episode back.

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

With the drama taking a temporary lull in Storybrooke, it appears that Hook and Emma will finally find the time for a romantic dinner for two on this Sunday’s return episode of Once Upon a Time

Until someone else joins their party, that is.

However, several Storybrooke residents don’t look nearly as happy as these two in the following episodic photos, unveiled this week by ABC.

Regina finds solace in her son now that the love of her life as left town…with his wife. And Belle doesn’t appear to be in a party mood since she banished her husband to the real world.

Speaking of which, what is Mr. Gold up to now that he’s out in the big city without his magic?

1. A Romantic Evening – Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 13
Now that there is a lull in the drama in Storybrooke, Hook and Emma finally get to enjoy a romantic evening.

2. An Interruption – Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 13
Is someone trying to interrupt their evening or did Hook say something to put that look on Emma’s face?

3. Party of Three – Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 13
Well, it appears that Regina has joined their party. That does take the romance out of things.

6. All Smiles – Once Upon a Time Season 4 Episode 13
Hook and Mary Margaret might be all smiles but we doubt Belle is feeling up for a party after she banished her husband from Storybrooke.
