Once Upon a Time‘s mysterious Season 7 “reset” is a liiiitle bit less mysterious now, after the ABC series held court on Saturday at the D23 Expo in Anaheim.

Coming out of the May finale, all viewers knew was that everyone in Storybrooke (as well as the Evil Queen and Robin Hood) received a happy ending — after which the action leaped forward to “years later.” There, a storybook-toting young girl named Lucy trekked to Seattle to introduce herself to her father, a grown-up Henry, and urgently inform him, “Your family needs you.”

In the immediate wake of that jaw-dropper, the head of ABC teased at Upfronts that in Season 7, Hook, the Evil Queen and Rumplestiltskin — played by the only returning series regulars, Colin O’Donoghue, Lana Parrilla and Robert Carlyle — “return but with new identities in a new city, facing a new curse” (plus, this bevy of cast additions.)

New identities? A new curse? And original series lead Jennifer Morrison back for just one episode? Did the happy endings not stick?? Here’s what series co-creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis, plus cast member O’Donoghue, shared about Season 7, which will air this fall, Fridays at 8/7c.

* When asked if departing series regulars other than Morrison — who is set to reprise her role for one episode next season — would return, Kitsis remarked “I would be disappointed if we didn’t” have them back, to which Horowitz said, “That means yes.”

* Addressing concerns that the show’s revamp will erase the happy endings that many of the characters got, Horowitz noted that “they weren’t so much happy endings as they were happy beginnings.” Season 7 is not “a complete reset or reboot. It’s a new chapter.” Kitsis then emphasized that they’re “not interested in erasing those six years or [making] people feel like they wasted six years.”

* New series regular Dania Ramirez is playing a “new” version of Cinderella, as shown in photos opposite Adult Henry (played by Andrew J. West). More on that here.

* Might Henry have a half-sibling? “We can’t say whether or not [Emma and Hook] have a child, but we can tell you we will answer that question in the beginning of the season,” Kitsis replied.

* “We meet [Hook] in new circumstances [in Seattle] in the premiere. In the second episode, we really delve into what happened to him,” Horowitz said, adding that “there’s a flashback story that explains a lot.”

* Although Hook is without his love, don’t expect him to embrace a new lady. “I think that Emma is absolutely Hook’s soulmate, as we saw,” Kitsis said. “The Hook that we all know and love, his eyes are only for Emma.”  Added Horowitz: “How could he look elsewhere?”

* As for whether Hook will go bad without Emma, “There’s always the danger of Hook returning to his villainous ways, but I think his good heart [stops] him from going all the way,” Kitsis reassured the audience.

Hosted by D23’s very own Jeffrey Epstein, D23 Expo 2017 welcomed Once Upon a Time creators and executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz—as well as Hook himself, actor Colin O’Donoghue, to the Expo Arena stage for a fairy tale of a discussion about all things Storybrooke… and what to expect when the show’s new season begins this fall.

As Once fans know, the series ended its recent sixth season by flashing forward—establishing Henry as an adult (played by Andrew West) and debuting a little girl named Lucy… who’s Henry’s daughter! Edward and Adam began the panel by chatting with Jeffrey about the show’s “new chapter,” which introduces fresh locations (Seattle, Washington, in the present day, and the Enchanted Forest in flashbacks) and exciting, brand-new characters. Case in point: D23 fans were the very first to see a photo of Henry’s wife, played by Dania Ramirez from Devious Maids. And if that weren’t exciting enough, she’s portraying a “different version” of Cinderella!

As Adam explained, “It was time to close [one] chapter and start a new one.” The plan has always been to keep moving these stories forward, explained Edward. But never fear: When Jeffrey asked whether fans would see some beloved Once Upon a Time “friends” in some future episodes, Edward admitted, “I’d be disappointed if we’d didn’t.” And both Edward and Adam urged fans to keep their eyes peeled for big happenings in the first half of the season… like whether or not Henry has a sibling (via mom Emma and step-father Hook), as well as tons of backstory on Hook’s current situation in Seattle.

Speaking of Hook, the assembled crowd went absolutely wild when Colin took the stage! Jeffrey spoke with all three gentlemen about last season’s fantastic musical episode (written by Disney company composers Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner)—and Colin clued fans into a secret: he’d broken his foot during that episode’s shoot. (In fact, it’s still broken!) But in the grand tradition of musical theatre, “the show must go on,” and Colin finished filming the show. Eventually, Jeffrey and the panelists played a game built for a serious Once fan—asking them some fantastic “deep-cut” trivia questions about Hook’s backstory.

As a surprise for the Expo Arena crowd, Edward and Adam debuted a sneak peek of a featurette about the making of the musical episode—one that’ll be available on the DVD of Once Upon a Time Season Six, available this August. But Colin had one more surprise up his sleeve. At Jeffrey’s behest, with microphone in hand, he delighted the crowd with an amazing live rendition of “Revenge is Gonna Be Mine,” his big song from the Once musical episode!

Stay tuned for Once Upon a Time’s “new beginning” when the show premieres its seventh season this fall.

The Once Upon a Time bosses came to D23 on Saturday armed with a ton of scoop about the upcoming rebooted season, including that new series regular Dania Ramirez will, in fact, be playing Henry’s (Andrew J. West) wife, a.k.a the mother of Lucy (Alison Fernandez), as — wait for it — a new iteration of Cinderella.

Executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis revealed that well see Jared Gilmore return as a young Henry when the season kicks off so viewers can see why he left home. “Henry’s the author of the first book, but he wants to go to the place where the happy ending isn’t written,” Kitsis says.

When he ventures to these new places, we’ll actually see different iterations of some of the characters we’ve come to know and love over the years. “There’s a Disney animated version of some movies and then there are live action version, and then there are some fairy tales that are told some countries and a different version in some others,” Kitsis adds. Hence Ramirez playing a different iteration of the character first played by Jessy Schram on the series.

“What’s interesting to us is that these books tell the stories, a lot of them about these classic characters, and as you know for the first six seasons we did twists and turns on them,” says Kitsis. “New books could have different versions of some stories and ways of looking at them that maybe we’ve seen before, maybe some new characters as well.”

“Dania Ramirez will be playing a different version of Cinderella,” Kitsis reveals. “If we remember Henry’s grandfather is Prince Charming [Josh Dallas], so we have the grandson of Prince Charming with a new Cinderella. We have a really fun take on the city and this new forest and we can’t wait to show everybody.”

Here are some of the other highlights from the panel:

Returning faces: Gilmore won’t be the only familiar face returning next season. When asked if any of the characters played by departing actors like Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas could return next season, Kitsis says, “I would be disappointed if we didn’t.” Horowitz quickly adds: “That means yes.”

Happy endings: If most of the characters we’ve come to know and love won’t be prominently featured, what does that mean for the happy endings we saw in the finale? “They weren’t so much happy endings as happy beginnings,” Horowitz says. “We want to make sure we honor what happened over those six years… As much as there’s new stuff and new characters, what came before still matters and is still a huge part of what this show is. It’s a new chapter. ” Kitsis adds: “We’re not interested in erasing those six years.”

New locales: As suspected, Hyperion Heights — the title of the season premiere — is the name of the new neighborhood that Henry will be living in Seattle. “You’re going to see it’s a neighborhood and that’s a great title for it,” Kitsis says. Horowitz adds: “It is obviously an homage to Disney history. We’re always really conscious of that and we love to find ways to Put that in.” However, we haven’t seen the last of Storybrooke. “We may see it a few times throughout the year, absolutely,” Kitsis says.

New flashbacks: “We love doing origin stories,” Kitsis says. “We’re going to find ourself in a new book and a new universe with lots of new characters to tell, so we’re going to continue to flash back. We’ll be in Seattle for modern day and we’ll flash back to the Enchanted Forest.”

Captain Swan baby: While the producers played coy about whether Emma and and Hook have since given Henry a sibling, we will get an answer soon. “We can’t say whether or not they have a child, but we can tell you we answer that question in the beginning of the season,” Kitsis says.

Hook’s future: As for what’s next for Hook, Kitsis promised we’d get a lot of info in the first two episodes. “The premiere we meet you in Seattle,” Kitsis said to Colin O’Donoghue, who joined them on the panel. “You are doing really interesting stuff. The kind of stuff that’s so interesting, people should watch it.” Horowitz expanded on the second episode, titled “A Pirate’s Life”: “We meet Colin in new circumstances in the premiere, but in the second episode, we really delve into what happened to him and there’s a flashback story centered around Hook which explains a lot.” Does this mean he’ll turn villain again? “There’s always the danger of Hook returning to his villainous ways, but I think his good heart prevents him from going all the way,” Kitsis says, also explaining that Hook’s love for Emma will hold true, despite Morrison not returning full time. “I think that Emma is absolutely Hook’s soulmate that we saw, so the Hook we all know and love, how could he look elsewhere? There is no Tinder in Storybrooke, people.”

The panel concluded with O’Donoghue singing the musical episode’s “Revenge is Gonna Be Mine” for the crowd, which you can see a snippet of below:
