DROGHEDA actor Colin O’Donoghue beat off competition from two other actors and three directors to claim the Best New Talent award at the Irish Oscars last week. The youngest nominee of the night, 22-year-old Colin brought home to Drogheda the prestigious Irish Film and Television Network (IFTN) Award, with the awards being held at Dublins Burlington Cour.

DROGHEDA actor Colin O’Donoghue beat off competition from two other actors and three directors to claim the Best New Talent award at the Irish ‘Oscars’ last week.

The youngest nominee of the night, 22-year-old Colin brought home to Drogheda the prestigious Irish Film and Television Network (IFTN) Award, with the awards being held at Dublin’s Burlington Court Hotel.

Colin, from Beaubec, was surprised to find himself among the six nominees for Best New Talent for his performance in last year’s RTE drama ‘Home For Christmas’ and even more shocked to hear his name called out at the glitzy ceremony. ‘I’m still in a real state of shock. I didn’t expect to win at all and nearly fell off my seat when I heard my name being called out,’ said the Drogheda man. He was presented with his award by renowned director Conor McPherson, whose latest film is The Actors starring Michael Caine.

‘The place was packed full of famous people and it was quite an honour to meet them all in the flesh. I was delighted to receive my award from Conor McPherson, who is very talented,’ Colin told the Drogheda Independent this week.

‘I got to speak to Sharon and Andrea Corr, Gerry Kelly, Bryan from Westlife and Louis Walsh, among others. It was a great night overall.’

Colin’s interest in acting was sparked by Drogheda’s Youth Theatre which brought him abroad to perform and he later joined the Calipo Theatre Company.

The up-and-coming stage and screen actor completed his formal training in the Gaiety School of Acting two years ago and has since gone on to star in both stage and screen projects.

It was, however, the Icebox Films’ production of Home For Christmas that brought him to the attention of the industry and the IFTN nomination.

Home For Christmas is a dark comedy in which an American mormon is reluctantly persuaded to pose as the boyfriend of an unsuspecting Irish family one festive season.

After this prestigious award, Colin is sure to be in demand and he reported that it has already been a ‘hectic week’ for him since the IFTN ceremony.

‘It has been all go this week. I’ve been called to go over to London for a couple of weeks for some castings at the start of the New Year. I have also arranged a few other castings for directors in the coming weeks so I am hopeful of securing another good role soon,’ he said.

‘I am trying to keep myself open for any opportunities that might come along. There are a few meetings planned and I’m very excited by it all. ‘It was a real honour to take home the award for Best New Talent and, at the moment, I’m a bit away with the fairies because of the enormity of it all,’ said Colin, who reserved special thanks for his mum and dad, Mary and Con.

Despite his new-found fame, Colin was back among friends in Drogheda, performing with his band The Enemies in McPhail’s pub on Sunday afternoon. The group plays every week in the Drogheda pub. ‘It was back to the real world on Sunday at McPhails with The Enemies where it was a little different from the awards ceremony,’ he joked.
